I started my career as a studio photographer and initially found mixing of camera flash with natural light completely baffling, and that's why I have broken it down into this digestible lighting class so you can learn exactly how I use flash to create my distinctive style and how you can use it to create yours as well!"  -Cat

Q & A

You will need SLR or mirrorless camera and access to basic lighting equipment in order to get the most out of these classes. Everything you need for each class will be listed out at the beginning of each video.

You should have a basic understanding of dog photography to get the most out of these classes.

The On-Location Off-Camera Flash (OCF) class is designed for photographers who already shoot in natural light and want to start incorporating off-camera flash into their portraits, or develop their existing understanding of OCF techniques outdoors. It’s also a great option for studio photographers who want to take their photography outside and learn how to blend flash with natural light on location.

The Gel Lighting class is ideal for photographers who want to develop their studio skills and gain a better understanding of creative gel lighting techniques. It’s perfect for photographers who already shoot outdoors and want to start exploring studio photography, as well as studio photographers looking to elevate their work with more colourful and dynamic lighting setups.

If you already use basic strobe lighting and shoot in a studio, this class will help you move beyond simply lighting a subject and start using light more creatively.

You’ll gain insight into how Cat uses coloured gels to create the distinctive style behind her Colour Sessions work. The class focuses not just on technical setup, but on developing more dynamic, artistic images using light in a way that feels intentional, expressive, and visually unique.

You’ll also see Cat’s full creative process in action from concept and setup through to camera settings, problem-solving, and final image creation, helping you refine your own workflow and push your studio work to the next level.

Each class is around an hour long and is broken down into several bite-sized sections, allowing you to either watch the full masterclass in one sitting or work through it in more digestible chunks at your own pace.

You’ll also be able to rewatch the classes as many times as you like, giving you plenty of opportunity to fully absorb the information and revisit techniques whenever you need to.

The messaging in both of these classes is primarily aimed at dog photographers, but the techniques can be applied to any animal and even human photography. While the subjects may be dogs, the lighting techniques, creative approaches, and technical skills taught throughout the courses are relevant far beyond dog photography alone.

Cat has never previously shared her understanding of light and the techniques she has developed over the past 20 years, from first learning professional photography within a studio environment to later taking her camera outdoors.

These two unique courses are both deeply focused around light, teaching both studio and outdoor lighting techniques through Cat’s distinctive creative approach and individual style.
